Tesla stock TSLA gained 6.2% on Thursday as investors looked ahead to the company\u2019s planned unveiling of its two-seater Cybercab in Texas, putting its autonomous vehicle ambitions back in focus.<\/p>\n

The electric-vehicle maker is set to showcase the Cybercab at an event in downtown Austin, with the event scheduled to begin at 5:45 p.m. ET. <\/p>\n

Tesla has provided limited details about the launch.<\/p>\n

The Cybercab is designed without a steering wheel and is intended to become the main vehicle in Tesla\u2019s planned driverless ride-hailing network. <\/p>\n

CEO Elon Musk has described the vehicle as central to Tesla\u2019s efforts to build a large-scale autonomous transportation business.<\/p>\n

Tesla\u2019s robotaxi ambitions face execution challenges<\/h2>\n

Tesla currently operates a limited robotaxi service using autonomous Model Ys, with some vehicles carrying human safety monitors and others operating without them.<\/p>\n

The company launched a pilot program in Austin in June 2025 and has since expanded the service to several other cities in Texas and Florida. <\/p>\n

Operations have often been restricted to areas that are considered easier for autonomous vehicles to navigate.<\/p>\n

Tesla has said Cybercab production began in April 2026, although Musk cautioned that initial production would be very slow. <\/p>\n

The company has not provided clarity on how quickly the vehicles can be deployed at scale.<\/p>\n

The rollout has also fallen short of some of Musk\u2019s previous predictions. <\/p>\n

In July 2025, he said Tesla\u2019s robotaxi network would expand at a hyper-exponential rate and reach half of the US population by the end of that year. <\/p>\n

Those targets were not achieved, and Tesla executives have adopted a more cautious approach as the company focuses on avoiding injuries or fatalities.<\/p>\n

Reuters testing of Tesla\u2019s robotaxi service following launches in Dallas and Houston earlier this year found long waiting times and limited availability. <\/p>\n

In three Dallas rides, the vehicles also left a reporter roughly 15 minutes away from the advertised downtown destination.<\/p>\n

Cybercab faces regulatory and competitive hurdles<\/h2>\n

Regulatory restrictions could limit Tesla\u2019s ability to quickly commercialize the Cybercab. <\/p>\n

Federal rules cap the number of vehicles manufacturers can sell without steering wheels and pedals, although companies can deploy unlimited numbers of such vehicles for testing.<\/p>\n

California presents another hurdle. Tesla does not currently have permits to operate a robotaxi service or test driverless vehicles without a safety driver who can take control from the front seat.<\/p>\n

Texas records showed Tesla had 420 autonomous vehicles registered in the state as of Wednesday evening, including 45 Cybercab vehicles. Waymo, Alphabet\u2019s driverless taxi leader in the US, had 988 registered vehicles in Texas.<\/p>\n

Investors watch cybercab\u2019s business potential<\/h2>\n

Driverless vehicles have become an important part of the investment case for Tesla, whose market value stands at about $1.4 trillion. <\/p>\n

At the same time, its core electric-vehicle business faces growing competition globally, particularly from Chinese EV manufacturers.<\/p>\n

Musk has said the Cybercab could eventually become Tesla\u2019s highest-volume vehicle. <\/p>\n

The company also plans to allow individual owners to add or remove their vehicles from Tesla\u2019s driverless ride-hailing fleet when they are not using them.<\/p>\n

Analysts are now focused on whether Tesla can demonstrate that the technology is ready for broader commercial deployment. <\/p>\n

Florian Frischmuth, senior vice president of digital engineering at Envorso, said in Investor’s Business Daily report that the key issue is the operational maturity of the system rather than the demonstration itself.<\/p>\n

StoneX reiterated a Buy rating and a $475 price target on Tesla, while Barclays maintained a Hold rating with a $370 target. <\/p>\n

Morgan Stanley analyst Andrew Percoco has also highlighted the greater significance of the latest event compared with previous Tesla demonstrations.<\/p>\n

Tesla shares had already gained 16% in August, adding to the market\u2019s focus on whether the Cybercab launch can provide further evidence of progress in the company\u2019s autonomous driving strategy.<\/p>\n
